For most small local businesses, month-to-month SEO is the safer choice: you keep paying only while you see progress. A contract can make sense for large projects with a big upfront build. Either way, what matters most is what's inside the agreement.

Here's how to compare them. We're a Denver SEO company that only offers month-to-month plans, so we'll be upfront about the trade-offs too.

Why agencies ask for contracts

SEO takes months to show full results, so agencies want time to prove their work. That's a fair point. Rankings usually build over three to six months, as we explain in how long local SEO takes. But you can plan to stay six months without being forced to.

When month to month is the better fit

  • You're a local service business with one or a few locations
  • You want to test an agency before committing
  • Your budget might change with the seasons
  • The work is ongoing: Business Profile, reviews, content and links

When a contract can make sense

  • A large upfront project, such as a full website rebuild, where the agency invests heavily in the first months
  • Enterprise or multi-location campaigns with many people involved
  • A clear discount you actually want, with a fair exit clause

What to check in any SEO agreement

  • Notice period. How many days' notice to cancel?
  • Exit terms. Is there a fee for leaving early? How much?
  • Ownership. Do you keep your Business Profile, website, content and accounts if you leave?
  • Scope. Is the monthly work listed in writing?
  • Setup fees. Are there one-time fees, and are they refundable?
  • Reporting. How often, and does it show calls and leads, not just rankings?

If an agency won't put these in writing, that tells you something.

Our approach

FAQ

Is month-to-month SEO less effective?

No. The work is the same. The difference is only how easily you can leave.

How long should I stay with an SEO agency?

Plan for at least six months to judge results fairly, unless there's no sign of progress after three.

What happens to my rankings if I cancel?

They don't vanish overnight. Without ongoing work they usually slip as competitors keep improving.
