A business directory listing, also called a citation, is any place online that shows your business name, address or service area, and phone number. Consistent listings help Google trust your details, and give AI assistants more sources that confirm what you do and where.
You don't need hundreds. You need the right ones, with identical details. Here's our priority list as a local SEO company in Denver.
Before you start: write down your exact details
Decide once, and copy it exactly everywhere:
- Business name, exactly as on your signage and Business Profile
- Phone number, one local number
- Address, or "Denver, CO" plus service area if you're a service-area business
- Website URL, the same version every time (with www or without)
- Hours, categories and a short description
Tier 1: Do these first
| Directory | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Google Business Profile | Google Maps and the Map Pack |
| Bing Places for Business | Bing, Microsoft Copilot and AI tools that use Bing results |
| Apple Business Connect | Apple Maps and Siri |
| Yelp | Widely used review site, often cited by AI tools |
| Facebook business page | Customers check it; it's a common source of business details |
| Better Business Bureau (BBB) | Trust signal, especially for contractors |
Tier 2: Data sources that feed other sites
Some companies supply business data to many apps and maps. Listing your business with them spreads your correct details further:
- Data Axle
- Foursquare
Tier 3: Denver and Colorado sources
- Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce, and your local chamber (Aurora, Lakewood, Boulder and others)
- Neighborhood and business improvement district groups
- Colorado trade associations for your industry
- Nextdoor business page, popular for local recommendations
- Local sponsorships and community sites that list supporters
Make sure the name on your Colorado Secretary of State business registration matches the name you use everywhere else.
Tier 4: Industry directories
| Industry | Directories to consider |
|---|---|
| Home services and contractors | Angi, Houzz, Thumbtack, HomeAdvisor |
| Dentists and doctors | Healthgrades, Zocdoc, WebMD Care |
| Lawyers | Avvo, Justia, FindLaw, Martindale-Hubbell |
| Restaurants | TripAdvisor, OpenTable |
| Agencies and B2B | Clutch, UpCity, LinkedIn company page |
| Auto repair | RepairPal, CARFAX |
Clean up before you add more
Old listings with an old phone number or address cause more harm than missing ones. Search for your business name and old phone numbers, then update or remove anything wrong. Duplicate listings for the same business should be merged or removed.
FAQ
How many directories do I need?
Tiers 1 and 2, plus the most important ones for your industry and area. Quality and consistency matter more than the number.
Are paid directory packages worth it?
Usually not. Most important directories are free. Avoid services that list you on hundreds of low-quality sites.
Do directories help with AI search?
Yes. AI tools often check listings and review sites to confirm business details. See how to check if AI recommends your business, our Business Profile checklist and how to rank in the Map Pack in Denver. For done-for-you help, see local SEO in Denver.
